Characteristics of the oval body

The most important factor when choosing what to wear is your body type, so knowing what shape your body has and what styles and silhouettes are best for it will guarantee that you will always look great. Any body type can look proportionate and balanced if you choose the right clothes for it.

If you have an oval body:

  • Your shoulders could be narrower or as wide as your hips
  • Your bust is large
  • Your hips are narrow
  • Your neck may be fuller
  • Your waist is undefined and is the widest party of your body
  • Your buttocks is flat
  • Your legs are slender

For this body type the main goal is to visually make the silhouette look longer and slimmer as well as to define the waistline. As a general rule wear darker colours on the top as well as vertical lines, seams or stripes. V necklines are recommended as well as long necklaces and scarves that are draping down, this will elongate the body and create an illusion of a  slimmer silhouette. To define the waistline try wearing 2 piece suits where the blazer is tailored at the waistline and is lighter colour than what you wear underneath. Also you may try wearing tops and bottoms with the same colour, which creates a visual illusion that your body is longer and slimmer. Choose tops with square, V or U necks, as well as, belted or wrap style tops to visually create a waistline. Another good option are tops with vertical details or tops that flare at the hip area. Wear bold jewellery including earrings to bring the attention to your face and neckline. Your legs are your best asset so try to put the attention to your lower body and don’t be afraid to experiment with skirt lengths and details for your bottoms.

What not to wear

  • Avoid tucking in your tops
  • Small patterns (as they emphasizes large shapes)
  • Designs with horizontal stripes
  • Heavy pleating, ruffles, or any extra decorations around the waistline and bust area
  • Very fitted styles or wide leg and baggy pants.
